A little time.
It's been quite a while since I've made any kind of news post. School and work are really dragging my attention away from my online activities for now. Hopefully after finals next week I'll be able to do a little work around here. This will involve resolving forum issues, cleaning up the downloads section, and possibly switching to another CMS. Only time will tell.

If you have any suggestions or comments on what should be done, or needs to be done, please feel free to make a post in the support section of the forums.

Temporary Uploads Section
I've noticed some people are uploading incomplete/in testing mods to the major categories. Please, do not do this! I have created a new Temporary Uploads section, please put all incomplete mods there. It is very important that the general sections are kept to only polished release-quality mods, it prevents confusion, and keeps me from being forced to clean up afterwards.

There are some exceptions to this rule:

If the mod is incomplete, but will not be developed further by the original author, it may be uploaded to the general categories.
If the mod is an older, incomplete version of a mod, but is still important, it may be uploaded to the general categories.

THESE ARE THE ONLY EXCEPTIONS! If you feel your mod needs a more permanent solution than the Temporary Uploads section's 90 days, please inform me and I will leave it in place.

Speed Issues round two... or is it three?
Yet again, it seems as though the site is having some speed issues. HTTP uploads and downloads are running at a BLAZING 30 KB/s max! I've contacted my host's support department, and the issue should be resolved soon.

It's strange though, it seems only this site, out of all of the others I have, is the only one to ever run so slowly, so often. Even the mirrors for The FreeSpace Port and The Babylon Project are running top-notch although they use ten to twenty times the bandwidth this site does.

Ongoing Speed Issues
I just wanted to let everyone know that I am aware of the speed issues this site seems to be having. I've contacted my host and the issues should hopefully be resolved shortly.

EDIT:
The site will be moving to a new server within the next few days, this should resolve the speed issues. This may incur some short downtime.

EDIT 2:
The speed issue seems to have been resolved. Everything should download much faster.

Downtime and Speed
Next weekend, my host will be moving the cluster my server is in to a new datacenter.

From the status blog:
Due to continued space and power constraints in our primary data center, we will be moving all central DreamHost functions as well as the “spunky” cluster to one of our newer data centers. This move will begin Friday, March 21st, at 9PM PDT, and is expected to last up to 12 hours, until Saturday, March 22nd, 9AM PDT.

You can expect the site to be down during that time period. Hopefully this move will resolve the speed issues I've noticed over the past few days.

Uber-Uploader in place!
Files larger than 100MB or so can now be easily and confidently uploaded using the large file upload area. Please follow the instructions on the page there.

Auto-Approval and Process Killers
Auto-Approval

I've finally found a way to have uploads auto-approved for registered members! Now when a registered member uploads a file, the file will automatically be added to the downloads database. I'm hoping this gives the site more of an active hosting feel instead of that "library" feel it had before.

P.S. Just ignore the "The file will be approved upon admin blah blah blah" message.

-----
Process Killers

Unfortunately, it appears that my hosting company has a process killer that stops any process it deems to consume too much CPU time and/or memory. PHP isn't the most efficient way to handle large file uploads, and this process killer has been killing uploads that consume a large amount of the server's resources, aka THE STUFF YOU UPLOAD. It seems that uploads taking more than twenty to thirty minutes to complete are being killed.

Fortunately, I have found a way around this using a nice little Java, Perl, and PHP combination called Uber-Uploader. This should allow uploads to run a much longer time, bypassing the evil process killer. I should have this implemented very soon!

That's it for this update.

Registration Issues
If you registered but never received a confirmation e-mail, please e-mail me at achtung@nukelol.com or PM me here or on hard light. I need to know if this is an isolated incident or if it's happening regularly.

Face it, $6 is NOT much money at all.

Just buy the damned game for $6, and I repeat, $6 dollars. If you can't buy it because you're too young, ask your parents. If you're old enough but don't know how, learn. If you don't have a means of buying it yourself, then get a friend to buy it for you and pay him/her. If you have no friends, then I dare say, that's your own fault.

You're right but i don't really care about the music, voices, cbanims, tech room anims, or the cutscenes , so does the first CD at least has : root, sparky, sparky_hi ,fs2.exe and fred2.exe?

So that answers it for you, you need all the disks.

Each CD contains different VP files (VP files are data files that contain the game information).

The VP files and the FSO engine are all you need to play retail FreeSpace 2.
